Summer 2013 CampsBelow you will learn more on two exciting STEM Camps for High School Students and another focused on providing K-12 teachers an initial exposure to STEM.
STEM Arts and Engineering Summer Camp at VCSU June 17-20, 2013
(Only High School Students-Grades 9-12) (Optional to arrive Sunday evening) In this hands-on design course high school students will be introduced to scientific concepts which are re-framed in artistic terms and applied across traditional engineering disciplines. Pursuing these convergent and complementary subjects will spark interest in studying engineering fields simultaneous to pursuing their interest in the fine arts. Whether regarded as a STEM Arts or an Arts STEM experience, an engineering and design perspective will enhance their ability to think and perform more creatively, particularly in their critical analysis of major engineering structures and architecture as works of art, utilizing hand shaped clay as a principal medium. VCSU ceramicist Armando Ramos and engineer Bruce Thompson will conduct the camp, noting the exceptional facilities at VCSU, a beautiful campus located on the Sheyenne River. Let us help you clear the murky waters of career planning. Cast a broad net into the sea of business and information technology careers so you can fill your career search tackle box. The camp will focus on engineering processes including the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Project management concepts will focus on the process groups. Business processes will include end to end scenarios and activities to identify ways to improve the process and become more efficient. Technology activities will highlight the SDLC and reiteration while learning technical concepts including computer programming, hardware, and Lego robotics.

K-12 teachers are introduced to engineering concepts, classroom implementation of STEM concepts and project-based learning, as well as STEM Lesson/unit design. Topics include: The Engineering Design Process, Project-Based Learning and Project Design for STEM, Backward Design (UbD) and Lesson Planning, ISTE and 21st Century Skills, Practical Technology Integration Ideas. This learning experience at VCSU is in a partnership with Mayville State University and is a collaborative motivated by the ND STEM Network. Scholarships are available on a limited basis. Valley City State University $100, add $50 if VCSU Graduate Credit is desired. Registration can be completed online for this Teachers-only Boot Camp offered by the Great Plains STEM Education Center at VCSU.
